What an excellent ground of hope and confidence we have when we reflect upon these three things in prayer - the Father's love, the Son's merit and the Spirit's power! - Thomas Manton
I have moments that I grasp it - the temporary nature of our time here, the limits to our suffering, the vastness Christ's sacrifice, the Father's love and the Spirit's power. The moments provide the peace and security that I long for. Oh how I pray for these moments to extend into minutes and hours and days until it could become a state of being! This believing in His goodness, trusting in His faithfulness, receiving of His steadfast love, standing firm on this hope secure. It would change everything. The way I love my neighbor, the way I discipline my children, the way I respond to my spouse, the way I carry out my work. Oh Spirit help my finite mind to understand your infinite ways!
For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light and momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. - 2 Corinthians 4:15-17
Today I am bone tired and weary, and it's a Monday. The tasks of the week stretch out before me, a giant to-do list waiting for my check marks of success. I want to crawl back into bed! As my outer self is wasting away, I pray for my inner self to be renewed today. There is hope beyond the to-do list, the birthday planning, the Easter celebration, the in-laws visiting. These are all beautiful things that deserve celebration and planning and care, but, my salvation does not lie in the perfect Easter brunch, birthday brownies and clean bathroom for my guests.
Spirit, please help me to understand!
